Nelson was born near Port Shepstone in KwaZulu Natal in 1981.Although he was a successful student, matriculating in 2003, his passions were not in the classroom. He would spend hours drawing animals and trees and he loved to play and watch soccer.A fortunate meeting with Elias Lulanga, who had worked in Port Shepstone before joining Ardmore, opened the door to an existing future for Nelson. He learnt quickly and within a year had gained top status amongst the painters at Ardmore.
Fèe Halsted-Berning, who has been training Nelson, describes him as one of Ardmore's youngest and most talented artists. With his subtle ability to mix colours, his attention to detail and the wonderful balance of his graphic compositions, he produces a clear bold design.
Many pieces he painted, including urns, platters and candlesticks, were included in the Christie's exhibition shown in London in January 2004 and were quickly snapped up at the auction which followed.Nelson has ambitions to continue his studies and hopes that, with the aid of the Ardmore Excellence Fund, he will be able to learn more about painting.
