exhibition at the William Humphreys Art Gallery,
Kimberley

30 July 2009

David Walters invited ceramicists from around South Africa to produce work in response to these six linocuts by Gabisile Nkosi, "I consulted with Malcolm Christian of Caversham Press in Natal, and he felt that this portfolio had a lot to offer, in so many ways, not least of which was that the artist Gabisile Nkosi died last year under very sad circumstances, and is a great loss to the art community. We wish to honour her vision and her life."

Top South African Ceramicists exhibited included, Alex Shabalala, Catherine Berning and Fee Halsted Berning from Ardmore Ceramic Art, Hennie Meyer, Ralph Johnson, Sue van Rensburg, Sarah Walters, Clementina van der Walt, John Wilhelm, Catherine Glenday and  Louise Gelderblom.

HEALING- A Suite of 6 Linocuts

Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery

These prints were part of Gabi’s Exhibition which held at the Gateshead Library, UK in September 2007. They echo the need to establish balance through an integration of the spiritual and the physical, and creating significance by exploring those things of meaning in her life and the relevance of these to others. By growing and teaching the lessons that recognizes the past; helping to realize the potential that rest in the present and through taking responsibility for the future she helps build a legacy of pride that is based on compassion and dignity.

Culanami/ Sing with me – The image is about two home-seekers, one singing about his family ad the second one about soul food. The plantation is about segregation and forced removals. Singing was one and is still a tool which so many use to heal their inner-self in different ways.

Isizukulwane/Generations - No Matter how bad apartheid affected and destroyed our fore fathers , It made our generation strong and taught us to see obstacles as opportunities.

Ongaphansi Nongaphezulu /Ups and Downs – The Cows symbolize my spirit. It’s the power that defines me as a South African woman who was affected by apartheid in many different ways.

Umthwalo/Baggage – As cows symbolize my strength, this image is about the spirit of Ubuntu in isiZulu meaning humanity

Ugubani/Who are you – During the time of apartheid era millions of South Africans died because of the colour of their skin. Today we call ourselves a rainbow nation that has healed so many souls but people are now dying from HIV/AIDS.

Uxolo/Peace – The image is about honouring people like Nelson Mandela and many more who were able to raise their voices in order to fight against apartheid
